Bookbinding 2 - Independent Stream

In Bookbinding 2, participants make two books. The models were chosen to refresh the training from Bookbinding 1 and to act as a transition from case binding (where the textblock and case are prepared separately, the case covered off the book, and the two units put together) and true binding (where the boards are attached to the text block, and covering-in takes place on the book).

The Independent Stream for Bookbinding 2 consists of approximately 8 hours of videos in MP4 format, a manual, and an endpaper enrichment segment of 3 hours of video and a manual. The materials will be provided for download from the Thinkific platform.

CBBAG Home Study videos were recorded during a live workshop. The “fly-on-wall” experience means that the videos have all the charms and faults of a real-life workshop situations and not all elements are shown in step-by-step direct demonstrations. For a disciplined learner, the information will be of excellent value.

This workshop is based on an in-person workshop with limits on time for the participants, so the projects are worked on in tandem – parts of Book 1 can dry while Book 2 can be worked on, so the manual is presented in this manner to parallel the videos as much as possible. The workshop materials include an order of procedure document which is a list of the steps in the order needed for each book to help guide through the differences between the two books to be made.

Bookbinding 2 covers the following main subjects:

- Recessed-cord lap stitch textblock sewing
- Tape-sewn lap stitch textblock sewing
- Hooked endpapers with Invisible and Visible hinges
- An enrichment segment on Endpapers
- Trimming and finishing with simple edge treatments of the top edge of the textblock
- Two-stripe worked endband
- Rounding and backing a textblock to a 45-degree shoulder
- Spine consolidation - lining and the hollow tube
- Casing in using the German style
- Covering-in on the book using the Bradel attachment of boards to textblock

WORKSHOP PROJECT OUTLINE

Book 1 is a larger version of the final Bookbinding I case bound project, lap sewn on tapes, with a hooked invisible hinge style endpaper, and with the addition of rounding and backing, trimming and finishing of the top edge of the textblock, hand sewn endbands and a hollow. This book has a German case, covered in half cloth, with spine strip or corners and decorative paper sides.

Book 2 will be sewn with a lap stitch on sawn-in recessed cords with visible hinge hooked endpapers, will be rounded and backed and trimmed, will have a coloured edge, hand sewn endbands, boards added to the textblock, and covering taking place on the book. The Bradel style is a direct attachment of boards to the textblock and will be completed with half cloth and paper. Sewing on recessed cords is a technique rarely used now because of the cutting into the spine which weakens it. But It is important to have some knowledge of sewing on recessed cords for restoration purposes, since problems encountered often are recessed cord related. Recessed cords also produce a super smooth spine facilitating elaborate finishing of the spine.
