ONLINE: 360 degrees Radial Hinge Circular Book with Kit Davey

The circular pages of this book rotate 360 degrees because of the unusual radial hinges that connect them.

The pages can be extended to create a caterpillar-look and then rotated back into a stack of circles.

We’ll also make a quick hinged case to contain your book.

Kit Davey is a Redwood City, California-based artist specializing in book art.  Her work pushes the boundaries of “bookness” by using unusual materials such as mica, acetate, flattened coins and teabags as pages, and making book covers from shells, coins, driftwood, rulers, buttons, and acetate.  Kit has taught over 70 different book structures, holding her classes by Zoom so students the world over can join her.  Her work is available on her website Found-Object-Art.com and at SF Bay Area art events.  She makes a book a day and shares them on Instagram:  @daveykit

FOR THE BOOK PAGES

  • Circle Cutter that makes 3” or  3 1/4” circles (7.6 cm or 8.3 cm) or a jar with a mouth of the specified to trace around to make the circular book pages.
ADDITIONAL REQUIRED TOOLS:
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Ruler
  • Exacto knife
  • Cutting mat
  • Liquid glue, such as PVA, Modge Podge, mat medium, Elmer’s or Yes Glue
  • Paintbrushes 1/4” (76 mm) or so wide
  • Jar with brush rinse water
  • Rag
  • Awl or a Small hole punch 1/8” (3.175 mm) in diameter to make a small hole

MATERIALS:

Please have all the materials cut to size prior to the workshop - there will not be time in the workshop to cut out materials.

Paper advice:  Double-sided card stock or mixed media paper (45# to 65# weight) will work well for all the elements in this book. Some scrapbooking papers are also stiff enough. Flimsy paper, like magazine pages, dictionary pages or map pages are not stiff enough.

FOR THE BOOK:

Pages:

  • 6 circles: 3” to 3 1/4” in diameter.  (7.6 cm or 8.3 cm). You can use a glass or something round to trace a circle if you don’t have a circle cutter.
  • Images to collage onto the pages: you can embellish the circular pages after assembling the book, or in class if time permits.

Radial Hinges: Spares are useful

  • 20 circles - 3/4” (1.91 cm)
  • 5 circles - 1” (2.54 cm)

These will be made using the hole punches and they will be on used on the back of the book and the paper does not need to be decorative.

FOR THE CASE:

  • 2 pieces card stock, 4 1/4” by 8” (10.8 cm x 20.3 cm)
  • 1 small brad/fastener (hole will be made by an awl or 1/8” hole punch)
