ONLINE: Book Arts: Realm of Solids with Paula Beardell Krieg

The ability to construct well-crafted solids opens up a world of possibilities within all areas of paper arts. We start with placing the study of solids in historical context, referencing the concepts developed centuries ago by Plato and Lui Hiu, and will move forward in time to modern masters such as Franz Zeier and Tomoko Fuse.

The language and classification of solid forms will be introduced. Their surprising attributes will be explored in ways that are simply delightful. The study of solids invites entry into a realm of puzzles, surprising transformations, and striking visuals.  Discussions will include methods of incorporating interior lights, examining how solid forms invite inclusion of non-linear content, and ways of transforming solids into enclosures.

All students will be sent PDFs prior to the workshop date.

Paula Beardell Krieg (she/her) has been a paper enthusiast for as long as she can remember, taking particular delight in 3D paper transformations. For thirty years she collaborated regularly with classroom teachers to create engaging and dynamic projects for all age groups.

Her adult workshops have taken place on zoom in and person both locally and in person at institutions ranging from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Center for Book Arts, the Museum of Mathematics, and small local venues.

Krieg regular shows her work at the Bridges Mathematics and the Arts Exhibitions, has had her work published in numerous books including ones by Helen Hiebert and Diane Mauer, and, since 2009, has written about paper and book arts on her blog Bookzoompa which is located at: https://bookzoompa.wordpress.com/
