Breathe

Susan Warner Keene
Breathe
Handmade paper with watermarks, lamination, and single fold; cotton and abaca fibres, aqueous dispersed pigment.
10.5 x 28 x 6.5 cm (when standing folded)

Artist's Statement: Much of my work involves placing imagery or text within the structure of handmade paper, embodying it in the form rather than placing it on the surface. In Breathe, the action made possible by the fold amplifies the watermarked text legible on the front panel. In proper lighting conditions, the text repeats on the inside as light passes through the watermark on the back panel. At rest in a triangular position, the fronts and backs of the letters embrace the volume of air potentially displaced by the fold.
