Nouveaux contes de fées
On pourrait bien être au nord de l'Islande ou de la Norvège : il y a là aussi de sorcières qui pondent des enfants blonds et les nourrissent d'histoires et de cretons. Le soir, peut-être on-elles aussi un verre d'eau à côté de leur lit pour mettre leurs dents et noyer leur sourire. Ou bien ont-elles les cheveux bleus sous d'épaisses lunettes avec des doigts crochus, pleins d'arthrite sous une main douce.
Ces grands-mères là savent plus de recettes par coeur, du coeur que toutes les mères. Elles cherchent l'enfant sans se douter que la petite les examine avec une attention forcenée, incapable de comprendre où elle sont pris toutes ces années, cette odeur de lavande et de poudre de riz et une peau nette et si douce sous les rides.
Retrouver l'enfance heureuse, la prendre avec les doigts, en faire un panneau réclame en trois dimensions, sons et lumières inclus ! Revivre cette capsule de temps libre, libérée, intégrée, insouciante, là-bas au fond du bois d'épinettes, près d'un lac pur où l'on jette les vieux poêles et même, les voitures…
Grossir quatre cent fois, comme au microscope de minces tranches de temps-fines mais si pleines de vie fuyante que, sous l'objectif, tout vibre et pulse impossible à saisir. On veut la saisir avec des pincettes, mais ça fuit, la vie. On ne peut saisir à la fois l’instant et le vivre; comme en physique nucléaire, l’observateur nuit à l’expérience. J’y étais pourtant et très consciente, appuyée sur mon coude au coin de la table observant, concentrée sur ce mystère, deux soeurs très anciennes, deux grand'mères à la fois.
Artist's Statement: In my work I try to capture the infinite moving complexity of life while revealing the hidden reality lying on the other side of the mirror. For A Book Arts Mosaic, I created a small book reminiscent of the very first ones I read as a child. It is called Nouveaux contes de fées (new faerie tales). It wants to convey the magic that surrounded then the very act of reading and the wonderful and mysterious worlds it never ceased to reveal to me. It is in French, naturally, even though I now read in English and Spanish. The magic of reading has only increased with time!
Jocelyne Aird-Bélanger majored in education and communications at the University of Montreal at the same time as receiving her diploma in painting and drawing from the Montreal School of Fine Arts. She began working in printmaking in 1975 at the Atelier de l'Ile, a collective artists' studio and for more than twenty years held the position of director and coordinator at the atelier. She has been awarded a number of grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Canada Council for the Arts. She has had fifteen solo exhibitions in Québec and France and has participated in more than 200 group exhibitions on the national and international level in the United States, Mexico, Portugal, and Japan.
Aird-Bélanger was invited to participate in a residency at the Centre national de l'estampe et de l'art imprimé in Chatou, France, as part of the IIIrd Print Biennale of Île de France in Versailles in June 2001. Her work was included in the exhibition BOOK AS ART XV at the National Museum of Women in Arts in Washington, D.C., in 2004. Her latest project, Virtual George Sand, celebrates the Bicentenary of the birth of this exceptional woman and artist. Her work is concerned with capturing the infinite moving complexity of life while revealing the hidden reality lying on the other side of the mirror.
